After an awesome Meme with [personal profile] panzersoldat , the Vice Admiral finds himself head over spikes in love and I came up with delightful little bit of crack!  I hope whoever reads this enjoys it!

Protect Reinhardt Wilhelm....

Alexei Stukov has not felt true, bone chilling fear in a number of years.  He usually faces anything remotely resembling it with a dark grimace and a muttering of “Do your worst.  What are you going to do, kill me?”

    The worst has already happened.

He’d been betrayed, murdered, transformed into the very thing he’d been trying to protect the universe from, cured-only to have it fail slowly and painfully, locked up and experimented on for years.

He had thought he was familiar with the worst.

Of course fate had to prove him wrong like it always did.  It figures.

He’d awoken to find three Zerg eggs in his bed and was suddenly wide awake.

The vice admiral is forced to admit something he knows to be true but despises.  He has no control.  He thought he did, but clearly not since here in his small living space, there are three Zerg eggs pulsing with life, already gestating something undoubtedly horrible.  He’d like to destroy them, but that would involve burning his house down and even that wouldn’t be a guarantee.

    They can’t stay.

    He can’t stay.

This wonderful little life he’s carved out on this colony world is as good as gone and his heart aches at the thought of having to leave it...of having to leave the one person whose company he actually enjoys and longs for when it is gone...but..but Reinhardt is in danger...as long as Alexei is here.  The eggs are proof of that.  He thought he could stay here and be happy....enjoy being a tired old man in love on a remote planet...but he can’t even have that since he had brought the cancer of the Zerg here, too.

There was no Creep on the floor anywhere.  He’d looked and checked and there was absolutely nothing that would indicate that it would spread beyond the three eggs.  That was good, he had time...time to think of a way to get whatever emerged into his personal craft that he had come here on and he could fly them offworld...maybe drop it off on an infested planet or if it came to it, smash the lot of them, himself included into an asteroid.  Maybe then he can die for real and save the only living person he cares about.

    Reinhardt Wilhelm.

Alexei tries hard to swallow the lump in his throat at the thought of leaving the Crusader.  He can’t just leave, he should leave a note or something...no...no he deserved to be told to his face...it is the least he can do.  Reinhardt will try to stop him.  He’s the decent sort and would definitely do that.

But....but he deserves to be told.

    Where is he now?

According to the clock on the wall...he’d be training that up and coming bunch of would be Crusaders.  Young upstarts...couldn’t hold a candle to the original, but he could be biased...no...he was.

    He had time.

This brood hadn’t hatched yet-he had to go find his beloved Rytsar.

............................................................................................................................................

Fortunately, it is not hard to locate a Crusader....especially not Reinhardt Wilhelm.  The giant German is trying to get the new recruits in shape.  He can outmatch most of them, but he is endlessly positive and constantly pushed them to do better.

Reinhardt was currently in the center of the Crusader ring.  Some poor young thing was trying to best him with a rocket hammer.  It was a fool’s errand.  Were it another day, Alexei would toss the younger man a healing pathogen just to give Reinhardt a worthwhile workout.

Alexei waved at Reinhardt from his place on the sidelines and he heard a joyous cry from inside the armor.  It was bittersweet for the infested Terran.  He loved the sight of his knight...the sound of his voice...soon that would be another memory and it made his heart ache to even think from being apart from it.  He smiled and waved again, letting the two men get back to sparring.

The match had not continued for two minute when the recruit had managed to get in a lucky swing with the rocket hammer and knock the older Crusader to the ground.

From nowhere, there was a loud, guttural snarl...and a mottled brown and purple shape launched itself onto the practice field in a flurry of iridescent wings.

    Alexei blanched.

It was a zergling.  A zergling had leapt into the ring...then another...chert!....that was two...where-oh....there was the third one.  At least all three eggs were accounted for.  Good, good, zerglings were small enough...he could fit them into his personal craft...if he could get them back to the ship and off the poor, confused new recruit.

Alexei lashed out, extending his clawed arm and wincing at the burning pain as muscles stretched and contorted to lash out at the zerglings.  He managed to knock them off the poor man in one fell swoop.

    “STOP IT!  Get off!”

The three zerglings paused when they righted themselves, their eyes glowing brighter than before, having heard his command and acknowledged it.

Alexei gritted his teeth as his arm returned to its normal size.  He seized the nearest zergling and attempted to make off with it...but then he noticed every Crusader in the colony was suddenly on the training field  with a rocket hammer or a gun.  It must be what they always suspected would happen.  He’d bring the Zerg to their quiet little colony planet and doom them all.  Alexei tenses...waiting for a blow that never comes.  His heart is hammering in his chest and his breath comes in short, desperate spurts.

“Prosti...Prosti...I’m sorry.  It was an accident.  It...It won’t happen again.”

He would make sure of it.

Alexei could not bring himself to look up at any of them, least of all Reinhardt.  He could feel many sets of eyes on him and this trio of monsters he’d created.

“I....I have to go.  We have to go.”

He released the zergling he had been clutching and shot them a look, his own eyes pulsing with golden light.  They trailed after him like loyal dogs.  If only...

    “Alexei!”

The infested Terran would know that voice anywhere.

    Reinhardt....

Stukov can feel his heart crumbling to dust.  How...how can this man love him when it is painfully obvious he is not a human being?

“Come with me!” he orders...talking to the zerglings, not his beloved knight...but both follow him...and he can’t tell Reinhardt to stay no matter what his brain screams at him to do.

They are outside the colony and headed back to Stukov’s small dwelling...and his personal transport...when the vice admiral notices the zerglings are falling behind.  When Alexei looks for them, he sees the three of them are walking beside Reinhardt, randomly bumping against him and fluttering their shiny wings.

“I cannot stay here anymore.  I have to go.  I am sorry.  I cannot risk spawning more zerg.”

It pains him to say...it literally pulls on his heart.

He can hear the great Crusader start to protest.

“I can’t stay here.  It isn’t safe!  Moy Rytsar....do you not think I would like to stay here and live out my unnatural days with you?  I would like nothing more in the universe...but I can’t risk bringing more of these....things into existence here.”

The three zerglings made a series of pitiable noises and wrapped themselves around Reinhardt’s legs, trilling and purring.  Stukov’s stomach clenched...those monsters...those claws...so close.  Reinhardt was no one to be trifled with...but younger, better equipped marines had fallen to the zergling hordes.

“Chert!  Leave him alone!  Get over here!”  Alexei shouted, stomping his foot in exasperation and throwing his cap to the ground.

The trio of monsters stared back at him with glowing eyes and looking hopelessly  confused.

“What?  What is it?  Why are you looking at me like that?  Why won’t you obey?”

They were supposed to obey him.  They were zerglings he had spawned.  As a higher ranking class, they should do exactly as he said...so why...why were they hesitating?

One of them untangled itself from Reinhardt’s legs and stepped forward slowly, its head lowered.

We obey.  We protect. came the psionic impression from the zergling.

    Alexei blinked dumbly.

    We protect Reinhardt Wilhelm.

Alexei’s legs gave out and he fell to his knees, overcome by the entire situation.  He’s so emotionally drained that every wall he has built up comes crumbling down and he is suddenly a disgusting, sobbing mess.  He can feel the zergling prod at him, sniffing, searching for the problem, unable to find any injury, it steps back and trills questioningly.  Stukov can’t even bring himself to shoo it away.  His body is wracked with violent sobs and his claws dig into the ground, forming deep grooves in the soil.

He’s so tired....tired of all of this....all he wants is to live in peace with the man he loves.  Chert! Why can’t he just die and take these terrible things with him and leave this  planet....the home Reinhardt loves so much...in peace?

    “Mein Schatz.

It is Reinhardt’s voice.  Why is he still here?

Alexei tenses as he feels himself being picked up and he finds he doesn’t have the energy or the will to resist.  He clings to Reinhardt’s shirt, trying to press its touch and scent into his memory so he can have it forever.  Reinhardt just keeps shushing him and running his massive hand over Alexei’s back like a child. He doesn’t know where they are going and he doesn’t care because his knight is there and every second with him is precious.

Eventually, he is sat down on a familiar soft surface...it is his own couch in his small home on the outskirts of town.  Chert, had Reinhardt carried him this whole way?  Apparently so.

“These...little zerg...they are not so bad.  They are kind of cute.  Very friendly.  They sure protected me from that big scary recruit,”  Reinhardt laughed and patted one of the zerglings on the head and it purred, rubbing its head into the touch.

Alexei shoots the beasts a glance. All three of them are pooled around the Crusader’s feet, staring up at him with luminous yellow eyes.

They are zerglings, there is nothing cute about them.  They horrify him because he made them.  He’d been feeling wonderfully human for the first time in years and now this?

But....but they said they were obeying him....by...protecting Reinhardt.

What kind of sick joke was this?

He can hear their thoughts....blissfully simple creatures...born programmed with an objective...to destroy....wait...wait WHAT had they said?

    We protect Reinhardt Wilhelm.

The realization hits him like a ton of bricks.

They hadn’t attacked the other Crusader....they had defended Reinhardt.  They didn’t know it was a spar.

He’d spawned them...by fearing for Reinhardt’s safety due to his very presence on the colony planet.  He’d brought them into being by trying not to bring the zerg here.  Would irony never cease?

    “I’m sorry.  I’m sorry.   I’m sorry.”

It is all he can say and it isn’t enough.  It will never be enough.

His own inhumanity presses down on him.  Everything feels heavy.  His unnatural left arm, his extra limbs...those three....things that have made themselves at home around Reinhardt’s feet.  How is any of the lovable?  Even likable?  He wishes he could die....just die and fade away right here.

Stukov feels Reinhardt gently place his hat back on his head.

    He pauses and blinks again.

He’d never picked it back up after throwing it down.

Reinhardt had carried that back, too.

“Alexei, Mein Schatz, It is alright.  They have not harmed anyone.  You made them, so I think they are here to be good boys...or girls...or...whatever they are.  Good zerg.”

    Alexei scoffs.

There is no such thing as a good zerg.

He feels a hand on his chin then...and Reinhardt’s hand stroking his beard and it takes his breath away and he can feel his own lip shaking, threatening to start crying again.  Reinhardt raises his hand, making Alexei’s chin turn up and look at him....really look at him.  The knight is smiling.  The hand that isn’t holding his chin strokes his hair and brushes it behind his ear.

    “You made them, ja?

    Stukov nods.

    There was no denying it.

    Reinhardt beamed.

“Well then, Mein Schatz, I have seen two miracles today.  The first was that trainee managing to land a blow.  The second was these three little kittens.”

The Crusader leaned in and planted a light kiss on the infested Terran’s lips.

“Come back to me, Mein Schatz, Mein Alexei.”

Reinhardt stroked his glowing cheek with the hand that had been stroking his hair.

“I see it in your eyes....sometimes you go somewhere...someplace else...and I have trouble reaching you since you are so lost in your own head...but...please don’t leave.  Stay here.”

    Alexei nods.

He cannot refuse Reinhardt anything he asks, even if it would probably be better for the Crusader if Alexei took his trio of monsters and disappeared into the night.  He just can’t bring himself to do it...he can’t hurt this man-it would destroy him.

The zerglings are purring happily and the giant German is highly amused by them...and if their sole command is Protect Reinhardt Wilhelm...well...then it should be alright for them to stay.  Impractical but interesting to say the least.  Not that Reinhardt needs protecting.  He clearly does not...but Alexei supposes he would sleep better at night knowing if trouble did ever arrive from the stars, Reinhardt would have a trio of fiercely loyal zerglings to back him up.

    “We should name them, Ja?”

As Stukov knew...he could not deny the Crusader anything.
